What does "быть не в своей тарелке" expression mean?

Dear friends, I hope all of you are in your plate. :) Don't worry, that’s not a mistake!     In Russian language we have a very popular saying  «  быть не в своей тарелке »  that literally means « not to be in your own plate »  The meaning of this Russian phrase is:   to feel uncomfortable in a situation, comfortless, strained, like a fish out of water, out of your place.  You can use this idiom with the verb "to be" - Ex:  Она была не в своей тарелке Or with the verb " чувствовать себя"   Ex: На вечеринках я чувствую себя  не в своей тарелке I found several English analogues of this idiom in the dictionary:  Like a cat in a strange garret - (this one is too old, the dictionary says that this the American idiom of the 19 century)  fill ill at ease out of place feel jumpy out of one’e element to be in the wrong box I always use this  idiom when I come at the party in jeans and realize that all the other girls are in beau
